In a similar vein to the LOLCats and I Can Has Cheezburger books, Cake Wrecks by Jen Yates takes a look at when professional cakes go hilariously wrong.
Featuring a selection of cakes with typos, requests which were taken far too literally, icing disasters, frosting that looks like poo and extreme wedding cakes, you'll be laughing, gasping and trying not to be sick. Our favorites included a cake with the word "nothing" iced on (as in a cake with nothing on it), disturbing dead-looking baby cakes and Happy Berthday cakes.
Baking disasters are something that many crafters can relate to, but it really is a case of lost in translation for most of the cakes in the book and the fact that these mistakes were made by professionals just adds to the hilarity.

Review by Wendy McCredie.
Weaving Un-loomed, is the new e-book from craft blogger Diane Gilleland covering simple but clever tricks, techniques and projects for weaving without a loom.
The book is aimed largely at the absolute beginners audience, albeit a craftily experienced one. Presuming as it does that its readers have never weaved before but are familiar with a variety of craft techniques. Reader beware, if you don’t own a sewing machine then choose your projects carefully.
Like many of the current trend in craft books it seeks to over throw the image of weaving as a stuffy craft, requiring a cumbersome and expensive loom. Instead it emphasises the wide variety of creations that can be woven and materials that can be used. Everything from magazine page strips to embroidery thread to ribbons and burlap.
The first chapter of the book is devoted to explaining the four main elements of weaving and why they’re important. It keeps things simple and the explanations are short and succinct, avoiding any unnecessary jargon or technicalities. There’s also a helpful section with illustrations to show different ways of combining colours to create different patterns and how the weaving itself can be manipulated to create a variety of effects.
The book then plunges straight into the projects, with no messing around making little practice squares that you’ll never find a use for, starting with an easy project and then working up through the skill levels. Which means after your first attempt is finished you’ve actually got something practical you can use. Admittedly one tablemat may seem a bit pointless, but making a set gives you plenty of chances to practice and get the hang of the technique. The skill levels themselves are quite straight forward, dividing the book into ‘easy’, ‘moderate’ and ‘a bit of a challenge’.
The projects’ instructions come in two versions; first the instructions are laid out in short paragraphs each with an illustrative photograph and helpful sidebars with tips. Secondly there’s a ‘printer-friendly’ version that can be easily packed in the knitting bag to take with the reader as they craft on the move or just away from the computer.
A nice touch, for people who don’t want to shell out for the full book when they aren’t getting an actual physical book in return, is that the five projects included in the book are available to buy individually for $2.95. Which is ideal for the more experienced weaver who’s just after some new ideas and inspiration.
Overall it’s a colourful easy to read and follow book, and I’m rather looking forward to trying out the woven appliqué technique in particular.

Twilight by Stephenie Meyer
Review by Laura Vallis
If you haven’t heard of this book by now then I do have to question where you have been. A phenomenal success across the globe, this book has been topping the best selling charts for weeks now, and with the impending release of the motion picture (12.12.08 in the UK), it is bound to stay there. The first in the four part Twilight series, Twilight tells the story of teenager Isabella Swan and her romance with the enigmatic, Edward Cullen. And did we mention that Edward is a vampire?
When Bella moves to the small rainy town of Forks to live with her dad she does so with a heavy heart. Knowing that she will struggle to make friends, it seems as though on her very first day she makes an enemy: the astonishingly handsome Edward, seems repulsed by her mere presence.
Inevitably the mysterious stranger draws Bella in and before she knows it, she has fallen for him, though she unable to admit it, even to herself. When he saves her life, she is astounded by his speed and strength, though he denies anything untoward. As their relationship grows, so does Bella’s curiosity and during a trip to visit family friends she learns of old legends and rumours about Edward’s family.
When Bella confronts Edward about being a vampire, he admits it, though explains that he and his family only ever drink animal blood and would never hurt humans. However by this time Bella and Edward are irrevocably in love, and despite the danger to Bella’s life (for Edward could end it at any point), they cannot live without each other.
Their happy relationship is jeopardised when another coven of vampires search out Edward and his family. When they discover Bella, one of their number decides to hunt her for sport. In the tense scenes that follow, we learn just how horrifying vampires can be.
Firstly I would like to say how much this book surprised me. Pitched as a teen novel, I have to admit I wasn’t expecting much and to be honest the first few chapters had me convinced I wouldn’t like the book. Bella seems to be a fairly run of the mill, whiney teenage character with no distinct personality. But then Edward comes along; he steals our heart as well as Bella’s. His character is automatically interesting to us, he is intense and there is sense of mystery about him. Helped largely by the fact that this story is written in the first-person, we cant help but find ourselves falling a little in love with Edward. When the relationship between Edward and Bella develops we feel ourselves experiencing the same excitement that we would if it was our own relationship. We feel the thrill of being noticed by a boy we were infatuated by. This element of the novel gave me butterflies, my heart raced with anticipation and I became completely enthralled. It is a situation we all have, in our lives experienced, enabling us to relate to it, and get caught up not only in the story but also in our own memories.
To be honest with you, from an outside perspective the story is a little weak; the action at the end feels as though it was manufactured only in order to add some excitement to the plot. It is almost as though Meyer could not just allow herself to write a pure love-story, as she says herself in one of the later novels “It wouldn't be real horror without action." It seems that she really wanted to write a horror-story about vampires, but ended up with a superbly constructed love-story. Having said that, the action is engaging enough for us to want to read on and I finished the book rather quickly, at which point I went straight out and got the next three.
Overall I really enjoyed this novel. The love-story is spectacularly spellbinding and superbly written, taking into account the target audience and remembering that really us girls have never grown up! I am unashamedly in love with Edward Cullen, and am on my look out for a man of such passion of my own (though the vampire thing would be rather annoying). This book is fun and allows us a nostalgic escapism, making it an extremely compelling read.

A collaboration between photographer Mike Figgis and lingerie brand Agent Provocateur, The 4 Dreams Of Miss X is an artistic photography book which explores the concept of dreams. Played by iconic supermodel Kate Moss, Miss X shares her dark gothic dreams, as she is pictured in various locations around an eerie and mysterious mansion house.

Included with the title, is a 10 minute DVD of short films. Divided in to 4 dreams, the model narrates her surreal tales over a dream like sequence of clips.

If you're a fan of papercraft then you will love Complete Origami by David Mitchell. A comprehensive guide to the art, the book has everything you'd hope to see in a good origami title.
Starting with a brief but interesting history, the book explains origami throughout different countries and traditions. The projects range from beginner to advanced, though I must admit that they start to look rather trick by the time you get to the intermediate section. There are step-by-step directions for making a huge range of designs, including animals, shapes and flowers. There is even a selection of practical projects including Coasters and The Enigma Bowl, which would make a great little storage solution.
Some projects have only a handful of steps whereas the more complex designs can have 30+, making this truly a skill to be mastered. Don't let the pile of paper on your desk grow, turn each sheet in to something wonderful.

If you've ever wanted to pick up a set of knitting needles, then this may be the ideal book to start you off. The Chicks With Sticks Guide To Knitting by Nancy Queen & Mary Ellen O'Connell is a complete guide, so let the chicks take you on a crash course to knitting.
Progressing from simple to more complex knitting skills, the concept of the book is that you will be taught a technique and then provided with a pattern to try out using your new skill. With everything you need to know about yarn, tools, techniques and even washing, you can learn to make a range of knitted projects, such as a gorgeous and cozy, "Make Out" Sweater, s simple and effective Artisan Belt and a super cutesy Envelope Bag.
This book is a worthy advisory to the Stitch 'N Bitch series. Although this title is more technique rather than project driven, I think this can only be a good thing because you can use whichever skills you learn in the creation of your own projects.

Knitting may primarily be seen as a woman's 'sport', but with books such as Men's Knits by Erika Knight increasingly hitting the shelves, its popularity is growing with both sexes.
Some of the styles in this book are better suited to an older man, but there are 20 projects to choose from. To get the male opinion, Crafterella asked one of her guy friends what he thought of the book. "The key is what you wear the pieces with, you need a good sense of style", he stated. "The hats and scarves are really good".
There are some interesting pieces in the book, including a sweater with external seams, and others which use various cabling and texturing techniques. Whether you pick this book up for yourself, or for your man, it will teach you everything you need to know to keep cozy through the winter months.

Second-Time Cool by Anna-Stina Linden Ivarsson, Katarina Brieditis and Katarina Evans is a great beginners guide to revamping unwanted clothing. Covering the key areas of embroidery, knitting and crochet, the book provides neat and easy tricks for sprucing up and adding bling to less stylish pieces.

Taking inspiration straight from the catwalk, the book explains how to reuse and recycle materials to create your own, which makes this a really inspiring read. With projects such as a necktie made from a V neck jumper and a coat made entirely from pompoms, some of the looks are better suited to outrageous and confident fashionistas, though there are pieces to suit the more timid dresser too. Even if you don't initially find something to make straight away, I'm sure you'll be inspired to use these techniques to create something unique and wonderful for yourself in the future.
It just goes to show that one woman's trash is another woman's couture!

Sex And The City: The Movie
In the true style of Sex And The City, the movie book is more like a fashion magazine than a serious read.
The main body of the book focuses on the plot of the film, but there is also a catch up section for the preceding 6 TV series, the making of the film, the premiere and introductions by Sarah Jessica Parker and director, Michael Patrick King.
A bit like a picture book for the grown woman, each page is filled with designer clothing eye candy, and as the book steps scene-by-scene through the plot, there is commentary and insider gossip from the cast and crew. However, if it's the fashion you're in to, then you'll love the head-to-toe guides section where you're shown photographs of each outfit worn in the movie along with information on the designers for each item.
This is the perfect memento for any SATC fan and, although it won't beat watching the film, it will certainly keep you satisfied until the DVD comes out.

You may remember that we had Justina Blakeney as our Crafty Superstar several weeks ago, well here is a review of her sewing treo, Compai's latest book.
99 Ways To Cut, Sew, Tie & Rock Your Scarf is the third installment in the 99 Ways series and this book focuses on taking simple headscarves and transforming them in to trendy and fashionable garments and accessories.
You don't need to be a good sewer, or even sew at all, to use this book as several of the projects only require twisting and knotting. However, if you are willing to sew and cut the scarves, there are a heap of great projects to try. Some of the highlights include sewing a scoop-neck mini-dress, tying a shoulder tank top, knotting a knotted belt, stitching a satchel, sewing a pair of boxer shorts and wrapping a Frida Kahlo style hairdo. With nearly one hundred projects there's surely something for someone, for everyday and every mood.
This book scores highly with me and is going to be high on my recommendation list, so make sure to check it out. All you need to do is stock up on scarves.

Check out the team, pick up the book and get fashion tips and tricks at Compai.com

Amigurumi World: Seriously Cute Crochet by Ana Paula Rimoli is a charming book that teaches you to make the cutest of the cute amigurumi animals and other creatures. Even if you're not interested in picking up a hook and yarn, flipping through the pages still accounts for a pleasurable read.

My personal favorite is the Tiny Ami Turtle which is lovely.
Whereas the toys would make great presents for children, the book acts as a great incentive for wannabe crocheters. Definitely one to add to your collection!
