Sew a zippered purse and circle scarf with Dots N Stripes in Dundee, Scotland

How did you get started?

That's quite a bit of a story but I'll keep it short. I started sewing when my daughter was little but due to the lack of nice dressmaking fabrics my mum sent me fabrics over from Germany which I then used to make dresses for my girl. Judging from the response from others I realised that there was a gap in the market for these unusual fabrics, so I got in touch with suppliers and that's what got the ball rolling. So basically I turned my hobby into a job that I could do from home while looking after my daughter. That was in 2007 and I'm still loving every minute of it!

Where are you located?

As my shop is mainly an online shop I am very lucky to be able to work from home. You can find me in Dundee, 6 Gullane Terrace in Dundee, UK. I'm just off the Kingsway behind the crematorium. It is a quiet residential area with just a few local shops.

Which products do you specialise in?

I have a variety of dressmaking fabrics, ranging from cottons, denims, canvas, sweat, jerseys to boiled wool. All fabrics are imported from Germany and Holland so I can guarantee you you won't find anything like it elsewhere on the High Street. I also sell European dressmaking patterns and sewing magazines plus a lot of funky woven ribbons and trims.

Do you have a particular favorite product that you sell?

Mmh, let me think.... probably the jersey fabrics. I just love the feel of it and they are so comfortable to wear when made up into a garment. And they come in all sorts of colours and designs, so it never gets boring.

What's on the stereo?

I'm very flexible with that, really. Normally I tune into the local radio station Wave102 which plays a great variety of music. But only if I'm on my own sewing, during my workshops that has to stay switched off.

Where else should we visit in your area?

Now, that's hard to choose as there are so many lovely places around here. One of my favourite places to go is the Cheesery in Exchange Street, what a variety of cheeses she's got, just fantastic! And then I quite like to go up the Law. From there you've got spectacular views of Dundee and the surroundings, well worth a visit.

Do you host any workshops, classes or special events?

Yes, I run sewing workshops for beginners and intermediate learners. In half and full day classes you can learn how to use a sewing machine, make bags, cushions and skirts. The full programme is available on my website :

Is there anything else you'd like us to know?

I'm usually at home during the day, but as I don't have a 'proper' shop it would always be good to phone or email me before you want to come for a browse, so I can make sure I have time for you.
