Mix a lemon curd martini, Charlie pear and thyme for summer cocktail with Manhattan34 in Leicester, England.

How did you get started?

Our owner, Chris Baker, decided to quit his job as a hotel manager and start up a 1930s-inspired bar instead. Once he found the right building and knocked a few walls down, the bar opened in September 2011.

Chris wanted to create something totally different for Leicester with a unique style and character. Everybody is welcome in this Prohibition style bar, you don't need to be wearing the right shoes.

Where are you located?

We are situated in the heart of Leicester's Cultural Quarter, just around the corner from the Curve theatre.

What are your specialities?

We specialise in creating bespoke individual cocktails. We love making a variety of different drinks from old classics to newer molecular mixology cocktails.

Our staff love to talk about the ingredients we use, so, when you're not sure what type of American Craft Ale you fancy or your partner doesn't know which bourbon and bitters combination is best in her Old Fashioned, just ask our bartenders!

What's your personal favorite thing on the menu?

I'm torn between the Maple & Bacon Martini and Corn & Oil.

The Corn & Oil is an old Caribbean classic which uses a uniquely Bajan ingredient in Falernum, a clove and lime scented liqueur first developed in Barbados. The Maple & Bacon Martini is so unusual, and gets served with a side of Frazzles. I can't choose!

What's on the stereo?

We usually have jazz, Motown and swing on the stereo in the evenings. You can often find someone on the piano in the basement bar, or a saxophonist playing the blues to the workers on Friday nights.

Where else should we visit in your area?

We love to visit the Curve Theatre when we're not making drinks. For dinner you should check out the White Peacock and you can stay the night in Leicester's only boutique hotel, Maiyango.

Sports fans can check out the Leicester Tigers at their Welford Road Stadium or watch the match at the Parcel Yard, next door to the train station.

Do you host any special events?

We have special events almost every week!

I'm looking forward to Oxjam at Halloween, there's so much live music to enjoy. Dave's comedy festival hits town in February, it's always good for a laugh.

We host many tasting sessions and our cocktail supper club is not to be missed. This year's 4th July party was Gatsby-themed and we've got our birthday to celebrate in September.

There's always something happening at Manhattan34, check out our social media for more details.

Is there anything else you'd like us to know?

We've got a downstairs bar that's available to hire for parties and an upstairs bar where you can join in one of our amazing cocktail master classes. With friendly staff and fantastic drinks, if you've not already been to Manhattan34, you really should.
