Mix The Rum Diary & The Drunken Style cocktails with Wisdom Bar in Washington D.C.

How did you get started?

I started bartending in LA 1/2 block from the ocean. I moved to Washington D.C. in 2007, purchased a 100+ year old vacant commercial building and fixed it up with my father and uncle. We opened about a year later in October 2008 as the first dedicated cocktail bar in D.C.

Where are you located?

In the Washington D.C. on Pennsylvania Avenue, 1.4 miles from the Capitol.

What are your specialities?

Education! We do plenty of house original cocktails, have the largest gin & vermouth selection in the area but the cocktail classes and super friendly and knowledgeable staff is what makes this neighborhood cocktail bar stand out. I hire people who are passionate about crafting drinks and who like to share their knowledge. Wisdom is the cocktail bar where you are encouraged to ask questions!

What's your personal favorite thing on the menu?

I get bored easily and don't like to stick with a specific drink for very long...but for the moment my favorite cocktail on the new menu is the "Drunken Style". It is a vermouth based cocktail (Dubonnet infused with star anise) complimented with Benedictine and lychee liqueur with drops of Absinthe; it is a fun variation of the classic Chrysanthemum cocktail.

What's on the stereo?

A random assortment of Leonard Cohen, Frank Sinatra, Portishead, Hotel Costes, hiphop instrumentals, and new stuff mixed in like Twenty-one Pilots and George Ezra. I like to have a diverse lineup of featured cocktails and beats.

Where else should we visit in your area?

You can visit my other bars Church and State (All-American cocktail bar) and Atlas Arcade (80s themed old-school arcade bar)

Do you host any special events?

We host benefits, gin and cocktail tastings, occasional live music, and weekly Trivia (The bar is called Wisdom).

Is there anything else you'd like us to know?

I am opening a mixology school with my top bartenders in the next few weeks for industry and non-industry folks.
