Hillarys headed out on a crafts roadshow across 4 UK cities last month and we were lucky enough to be invited along to their Crafternoon in Glasgow with Joe Blogs and The Crafty Hen where we learned how-to make a notebook cover and hand-stitched bird.

Inspired by the class, we're teaching you how-to make your own sketchbook notebook cover and giving you a chance to win one of five goodie bags from the event. Just click below to enter!

Tell us a little bit about the workshop, the aim of the class and who it was organised by?

Hillarys Crafternoon was an afternoon of crafting hosted by Hillarys, Joe Blogs & The Crafty Hens in The Tea Rooms at Butterfly & The Pig, Glasgow. During the class, we got to craft with fabric from Hillarys new made-to-measure blinds range to make adorable projects to take home while tucking into delicious cakes and chatting to other bloggers.

Where was the workshop held and what was the venue like?

The workshop was hosted at The Tea Rooms at Butterfly & The Pig which was a beautiful, light and airy space with kitsch decor, flowers and plates on the wall. We were also treated to delicious cakes and tea throughout the class.

What projects were the class making and how did your creations turn out?

Our first project was a notebook cover which was really simple to make by folding and hand-stitching a piece of fabric. Getting creative with embellishments was the highlight and I made a blue floral notebook with a button and ribbon which was in perfect timing for Mother’s Day. The second project was a hand-stitched bird which we cut from prepared patterns and hand-stitched before stuffing. This was a little more complicated and my stitching must be a little rusty because it looked a little scrappy when I turned it right-side-out but super cute anyway!

Were you supplied with any materials and did you get any goodies to take home?

We were let loose of boxes of embellishments and stashes of fabric from Hillary's new collection and sent home with beautiful hand-stitched tote bags filled with craft kits, fabric, chocolate, candles and other treats!

What were the teachers like and did you get any one-on-one time?

The Crafty Hens were lovely, friendly and super helpful throughout the workshop. The instructions for each step were taught to us as a group and we were given print-outs to work from but the teachers were always on hand to answer questions and fetch us supplies.

Did you pick up any useful tips or tricks that you’ll continue to use at home?

I’ve never considered scoring the edge of fabric with a pair of scissors rather than pining but it was really easy and saved so much time. I’ll definitely be keeping that trick up my sleeve.

How big was the class and did you get a chance to chat to any new crafty friends?

There were about 80 of us in total with many bloggers, crafters and photographers I’d met before and we even ended up bumping into an old school friend. Everyone had a quiet concentration while sewing but there was lots of time to chat while eating our cakes during the break.

What type of crafters would you recommend this workshop to?

This type of workshop would be perfect for first-time sewers and bloggers who would like to try their hand at crafting.

Have you been inspired to go home and craft something from the class?

When I got back from the class, I couldn't wait to try making my own version of the notebook cover and alter it a little to add a pencil case for my drawing supplies.

Is there anything else you’d like to add?
