We head to The Make Den in Toronto where we learn how-to do crack stitching.

How did you get started?

We started out as an alterations business that also provided sewing classes for at-risk youth, through a partnership with a charity called PACT! I thought it was a great way to do something in fashion that could make a difference, and we're still providing kids with sewing classes 5 years later. We don't do alterations anymore though - our classes were so popular that we had to start offering them to everyone!

Where are you located?

We finally moved out of the basement, and now we're at 1244 Bloor St. W. We now offer screen printing, leatherwork classes, bra making, quilting, millinery classes and sewing boot camps! We've just taken over the top floor of the building, too - so look for more leather classes in 2015!

Which products do you specialise in?

Our fabric selection is small but well curated - some of our favourite fabric designers are Lizzy House, Tula Pink, Martha Negley, Joel Dewberry and April Rhodes!

Do you have a particular favorite product that you sell?

I'm loving April Rhodes ' Arizona' fabrics right now.

What's on the stereo?

90's rap! Da Dip by Freak Nasty is a studio favorite! Canadian ladies Katie Stelmanis (Austra) and Grimes are always on, too.

Where else should we visit in your area?

Tonnes of stuff! Our new neighbours, Home Bakery offer custom ice cream sandwiches. Holy Oak and Haven have great coffee, Bar Neon and The 3 Speed have great patios! Also, Bike Pirates will help you to fix your own bike! Bloordale is the DIY capital of Toronto.

Do you host any workshops, classes or special events?

All the time - you can check out our calendar of events, sewing classes, workshop and more online here: http://www.themakeden.com/calendar

Is there anything else you'd like us to know?

Oh yeah, we're part of an all girl, fashion designing bike gang! We're called the Deadly Nightshades, and we have matching jackets. Sweet!
